All that glistens

In a visionary project collaborated by stylist Clint Holton Potestas, designers Barbie Alvez and Simply Cebuana, sequins have been redeemed and placed in a new light. By pairing it with the right pieces, and by knowing which part of the ensemble to highlight—sequins can be a trendsetter’s new accessory in creating eye-catching, dramatic flair.

“(We used) metallic sequins that Barbie assembled into a cropped tank top and overlapped it with a tulle top—a good balance of sheer and glitter.

I paired it with a pair of high-waist pants that she also designed to give it an edge,” Clint said.

A bit of rule-breaking came into play as well, particularly in the use of chandelier earrings, designed by Simply Cebuana, to go with the already glistening top. Clint said, “If taken from basic fashion rules, the earrings may give us the so-many-things-going-on effect, but concentrating on a certain area of the look can add drama. So I ‘edited out’ bracelets, headpieces and cocktail rings.”

As for a more feminine approach at the technique, using the same sequined fabric, they draped a lamé and paired it with a silk taffeta skirt, which Clint explained, “contrasted the overwhelming effect of the glitter.”

“Pairing metallic pieces with dark hues, to me, is also the best option,” he added.

Maquillage here also deviated from the rules, he said. Defining the eyes and lips in dark and glistening shades complemented these ensembles well, creating an overall look—a balanced one, that is—that’s just enough to dazzle, and to captivate right at first glance.
