Join excellence awards, DTI 7 asks retailers

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is encouraging shops in the region to participate in the Bagwis Seal of Excellence Awards 2014.

According to DTI 7 Director Asteria Caberte, a shop that carries the DTI seal of excellence is certified as a responsible establishment that upholds the rights and welfare of consumers.

The DTI Bagwis Program (formerly known as the DTI-Certified Establishment Program), which awards seals to various establishments, aims to give due recognition to the entrepreneurs that uphold the rights of consumers and practice responsible business where consumers get value for money.

Caberte said another objective of the program is to create an environment where entrepreneurs uphold fair and honest business practices through voluntary self regulation.

Initial reports from the DTI 7 said there are five nominees from Negros Oriental: two establishments each for gold and silver seals and one for bronze.

Rosemae Quiñanola, DTI 7 Officer-in-Charge for the Consumer Welfare and Business Regulatory Division said they can accept more nominees, as the cut-off for application is slated in December this year.

Caberte said there are different parameters to measuer the performance of supermarkets, department stores, appliance centers to hardware stores and DTI accredited service and repair shops can qualify for the seal.

There are three levels of awards under the DTI Bagwis Program: bronze, silver, and gold.

For the bronze seal, establishments must comply with fair trade practices stipulated in the Consumer Act, Price Act, Price Tag Law and the requirement of having a consumer welfare desk or recognized customer service counter.

The silver seal has additional criteria to meet such as compliance with social responsibilities that include sound purchasing policy and having a good working relationship with the government by participating in the national or local government programs such as price stabilization and livelihood programs.

The Gold Seal, on the other hand, embodies the achievement of the silver seal requirements and some elements aligned to the ISO 9001 (Quality Management System).

The Bagwis program is implemented nationwide through its regional and provincial offices.

DTI has partnered with private sector groups in screening the nominees.

Business establishments interested to apply for the seal can download application forms from the DTI’s website or obtain it from the DTI offices.
