Ex-convict runs amuck in Alegria, gets arrested

AN ex-convict was arrested by police after he allegedly ran amuck following a drinking spree in Barangay Lepanto, Alegria town last Friday.

The police seized a .38 revolver with three live bullets and a 24-inch bolo from Frediwindo Mejellano, 40.

PO1 Johndryl Padin of Alegria Police Station said residents sought their help after Mejellano went wild in a neighborhood in Sitio Libo past 6 p.m.

When the responding policemen arrived, Padin told Sun.Star Cebu that Mejellano, a farmer, suddenly went after them.

“He was so drunk then he tried to attack the people there,” he said.

Mejellano was neutralized by police officers after several minutes. His firearm and bolo were also taken from his possession.

When he got sober, he couldn’t remember why he acted that way, the police officer said.

A complaint for alarm and scandal and illegal possession of firearms will be filed against Mejellano.

Padin, in a phone interview, said Mejellano was released from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga last Oct. 21. He was jailed for violating Republic Act 8294 or unlawful possession of firearms.

During the interview, Padin said they are also considering Mejellano as a possible suspect in the fatal shooting of a vegetable vendor during the Holy Week.

Last April 18, Paterno Navarro, 45, was found dead several meters away from his house in Sitio Libo. He bore a gunshot wound in his stomach.
