Utzurrum: For the love of my alma mater

ALUMNAE, graduates, classmates and homecoming denizens gathered, mingled and excitedly greeted their colleagues with hellos and how-are-yous, as the scene opened with Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion’s (CIC) 133rd anniversary.

This revered women’s college, which has stood the test of time, has proudly produced ladies in various professional fields such as medicine, government, business, culture and the arts, not forgetting a soft spot for the marginalized in our community.

CIC alumnae president for the years 2011-2013, Dr. Martina “Tina” Jordana, took upon her shoulders the awesome task and responsibility of organizing the entire production (and what a slambang success it was) assisted by a committee of course!

“All for the love of my alma mater, Mama Mary and my batch mates, Class of 1981,” mentions Tina beaming. Here are some highlights: Selection of Alumnae Queen and Princesses, whose photos we have published here. “‘Twas all for fun!” she explains, with those garnering the most votes declared as winners.

On the subject of charities—which CIC, through the Daughters of Charity (DC), is very much involved—an acknowledgment was received by Tina as the first alumnae president to start the “Legacy Programme” (college scholars) by raising the amount of P100,000 each in 2012 and in 2013.

This term also sponsored eight medical, dental and optho missions and feeding programs with the alumnae. After typhoon Yolanda, they helped rebuild a sister school in Bogo, the St. Louise de Marillac College, and a mission school, the St. Martin de Porres Academy in Daanbantayan, with P100,000 each.

Environmentally oriented activities were also engaged in, such as the planting of 1,437 seedlings of fruit trees with the help of regular and night high school students.

On the lighter, or should we say the more glamorous side of the affair, CIC was not wanting in beautiful and talented alumnae: There’s the incomparable singer Pilita Corrales, the very first Filipina entertainer to perform in exclusive Las Vegas; beauty queen and film actress Pilar Pilapil; and still another beauty queen, Miss Cebu Janice Bañez-Minor, who is also a shrewd entrepreneur and exporter, besides.

Congratulations, CIC, you have it al!
