THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has allocated P50 million for the continued widening of tunnels at City Camp Lagoon in preparation for the rainy season.
DPWH Baguio district engineer Ireneo Gallato said the funding will be used to implement flood control projects especially in the tunnels of the lagoon that leads to the Asin River.
"We will try our best na i-connect ang tunnel para mas lalong effective and efficient and control natin sa flood waters. Marami na rin improvements kasi makikita na rin natin na mabilis na rin mag-subside ang tubig," Gallato said.
He said a significant volume of water has been reduced in the lagoon due to the widening of flood water exit which is why there are no flooding incidents happening in the nearby barangays compared to previous years.
The district engineer explained fortification of tunnel walls is important as it accommodates a huge volume of water especially in the rainy and typhoon season.
The rehabilitation of City Camp Lagoon tunnels have been started in 2012 and has received yearly fund allocation to complete the project and improve the flood control mechanisms in nearby barangays.
Aside from the lagoon, preventive maintenance of roads in the Central Business District have also been accomplished by the DPWH-BCDEO such as asphalt overlay projects at Kisad Road among other rehabilitation projects.
The DPWH-BCDEO has a total of P300 million funds for preventive maintenance and other road rehabilitation and concreting projects budgeted for 2014.
The district engineer said some P200 million of these funds are still up for bidding covering four projects that will also be implemented this year with only 38 percent of the earmarked projects completed.
The projects include road widening at Kennon Road near the Bel-air section in Camp 7, Rimando Road and Asin Road.
