Metro Supermarket opens in Carmen today

THE Metro Retail Stores Group will open its first stand-alone Metro Supermarket today in Carmen town, some 43 kilometers north of Cebu City.

Metro Supermarket Carmen is meant to serve also the residents of adjacent Danao City and Catmon as well as Sogod and nearby areas, Cesar Jose Jesena, vice president for marketing and retail development, said in a press statement.

It is the 43rd store of the Metro retail stores system. The company said it will further advance Metro’s stronghold in Cebu as it continues to realize the opening of 100 Metro stores nationwide toward the end of 2015.

“The people of Carmen and nearby areas will now have a convenient and complete source of their groceries and other daily needs,” added Jesena.

It was about 31 years ago when Vicsal Development Corp. opened the first Metro store in downtown Cebu City. In time, it decided to brand stores according to their sizes, items offered and the markets being served.

“Beyond the usual Metro Department Stores and Supermarkets, as those on Colon, Ayala Center Cebu and Pacific Mall in Mandaue City, the company introduced the Super Metro hypermarkets and the neighborhood Metro Fresh ‘n Easy, starting with what were Tita Gwapa stores,” the company said in its statement.

It also operates the Metro Wholesale at the corner of Colon and Pelaez Sts. in downtown Cebu City and now a stand-alone Metro Supermarket in Carmen, Cebu.

Today’s opening in Carmen followed that of Super Metro Colon last Feb. 27 and Super Metro Basak along the Cebu South Road shortly before Christmas last year.

“The company will continue to venture into untapped markets with huge retail potential, providing them with a modern shopping experience, a business direction that will reinforce the presence of the Metro brand as a value-oriented retailer,” the company said. (PR)
