La Trinidad focuses on sharpening school children’s reading skills

LA TRINIDAD in Benguet has launched a program to improving the reading skills of school children.

The La Trinidad municipal government and its partners have signed the memorandum of agreement for the “Family and Children Reading Together” program which will benefit pupils from two elementary schools.

The agreement was signed by Mayor Edna Tabanda, Vice Mayor Romeo Salda and officials of the Department of Education, Hope Christian Academy and Synergia.

Parents of the 50 Grade 2 pupils also signed a pledge of commitment for the program’s success.

The program covers 35 students from La Trinidad Central School and 15 from Wangal Elementary School.

Dr. Evangeline Mandapat of Hope Christian Academy said the program will run from October to March 2016.

Teachers and several students from Hope Christian Academy will train parents to teach their children to read a book every day.

A test before and after the program there will determine the children’s progress, Mandapat said.

Under the program, a book library will also be set up in the school or barangay involved.

Ningning Doble of Synergia stressed the community’s role in helping children to read, saying it is essential for them in completing a good basic education. (Carlito Dar)
