Lack of docs derails city's Operation Tuli

SUMMER is when Filipino boys literally have to make the cut, but the City Health Office (CHO) is facing a problem on "overlapping of schedule" for Operation Tuli conducted in barangays since Davao City has only one government doctor per district.

CHO head Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said they record a long list of schedules for Operation Tuli in all barangays in the city since end of April until end of May.

"There is an overlapping of schedule because we only one doctor per district. Nurses are not allowed to perform circumcision. It's the doctors who can do it. If all the barangays now are asking for Operation Tuli, pag hindi natapos ang kanyang constituents, they will ask for another time for another tuli schedule," Villafuerte told Sun.Star Davao in an interview Wednesday morning.

There are a total of 11 political districts in the city - two from the first congressional district, four from the second congressional district and five from the third congressional district.

The political districts from District 1 are Poblacion and Talomo, with 40 and 14 barangays, respectively.

In Distirct 2, Buhangin District has 13 barangays, Bunawan has nine, Agdao with 11, and Paquibato 13.

Meanwhile, the political districts in the third congressional district are Baguio with eight barangays, Calinan has 19, Marilog with 12, Toril has 25, and Tugbok with 28 barangays.

"Now if you have 15 barangays with only one doctor, problema talaga. Kailangan may tamang schedule lang talaga," Villafuerte said.

She added that a district has only one doctor since the City Government of Davao has not yet created positions for additional medical practitioners.

Aside from barangay leaders, she said non-government organizations and local politicians also seek the district doctors for schedule on Operation Tuli.

Operation Tuli is an annual summer activity of the government to offer free circumcision to Filipino boys.

Villafuerte advised young boys to "make sure that the wound is properly cared."

The CHO also discouraged traditional circumcision as it might cause infection. (ANC)
