PNP ready for hosting 34th Aseanapol

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) will deploy more than 2,000 policemen to ensure the safety of the top police officials from the countries belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) who will arrive in the country to attend the 34th Asean Association of Chiefs of Police (Aseanapol), an official said Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Ferdinand Yuzon, PNP executive officer directorate for plans, said they are now in "full swing" for the hosting of the 34th Aseanapol dubbed "Forging Strong Partnership for Peace, Security and Progress," which will be held at Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Manila on May 12 to 16 and will be attended by chiefs of police from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Top police officials from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and Russia will also arrive in the country as dialogue partners and observers.

"President Benigno Aquino III will also attend the meeting as the guest of honor and speaker," Yuzon said.

The topics to be discussed in the conference, according to the PNP are the pressing issues affecting Asean such as illegal drug and human trafficking, terrorism, arms smuggling, fraud and cyber crimes.

The Aseanapol members will also tackle the progress of electronic Aseanapol Database System (e-ADS), the exchange of personnel and training programs among Asean police agencies, mutual assistance on criminal matters and the drafting of joint communiqué, which will be one of the highlight of the conference.

Yuzon said another highlight during the meeting will be the first ever formal hoisting of the Aseanapol flag.

The Aseanapol is an annual event, which started in 1981. It signals the further strengthening of ties among Asean police agencies for the enhancement of mutual cooperation and collaboration especially in fighting "highly technical criminal activities."

The first Aseanapol conference was held in Manila during the term of former President Fidel Valdez Ramos.

"This conference marks a homecoming for member nations, as the association was founded right here in Manila in 1981," Yuzon said.

The PNP have already hosted four Aseanapol conferences, in 1981, 1987, 1993 and 2003.

In an interview, PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima said "it was a pleasure hosting this kind of annual event since it will help the national police agency boost its capability in fighting against crime and befriending with neighboring countries." (Sunnex)
