Loud prints

THEIR initial plan was to start a shirt design project, sometime late last year supposedly for the benefit of Typhoon Haiyan victims. Unfortunately time constraints came in to play back then, until finally it was realized earlier this month and launched in an evening of enthralling live art performances and installations last May 2, Friday, at the Sacred Heart Alternative Gallery.

Aptly titled “Loud,” it is a joint exhibition and project of Cebuana artists Gigi Ocampo and Karby Beloy. Gigi is an instructor in the fine arts program of the University of San Carlos while Karby is an instructor of the Cebu Academy of Arts—from which both were former students of renowned artist and mentor Kimsoy Yap.

Loud is a multimedia project that aims to make noise on the artists’ stand of issues they feel strongly about: Karby on the aspect of beauty and self-identity and Gigi on spirituality. The artists extracted concepts and imagery from their paintings, and incorporated it in shirt designs, which were also mounted at the exhibit.

The exhibit ran from May 2 to 15 at the Sacred Heart Alternative Gallery. As members of today’s new generation of rising artists, Gigi and Karby will stage another exhibit, this time alongside women artists of Cebu, on June 6 in Ayala Center Cebu.
