Traffic re-routing in Bacolod looms

A TRAFFIC re-routing scheme is expected to be implemented in Bacolod City in the coming weeks.

Mayor Monico Puentevella said that in the interest of public order, it is deemed necessary that the city should adopt a new traffic approach and scheme responsive to its existing traffic scenario and economic activities.

Puentevella issued Executive Order No. 014-0414 adopting and implementing the proposed traffic experiment of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) through a re-routing scheme of public utility vehicles with routes within the territorial jurisdiction of the city.

In his order dated April 21, the mayor said that based on a recent study and assessment of the BTAO and the City Legal Enforcement Unit, traffic congestions are caused by many factors, but dominantly by traffic chokes in specific areas due to over concentration of traffic routes of some public utility jeepneys (PUJs).

Puentevella said these causes must be addressed dynamically using the division and sharing of traffic load approach by using other unutilized streets and roads of Bacolod.

The new routes will affect jeepneys plying the routes of Sta. Fe-Central Market, San Dionisio-Central Market, Villamonte-Central Market, Eroreco-Central Market, Alijis-Central Market, Alijis (RPHS)-Central Market, Mansilingan-Central Market, Fortune Towne-Central Market, Singcang Airport-Central Market, Tangub (Proper)-Central Market, Tangub (Highway)-Central Market, Punta Taytay-Central Market, and Banago-Central Market.

Part of the proposal is to include the Vendors Plaza as part of the routes of certain jeepneys.

Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., vice chairman of the transportation committee, will propose a resolution for the implementation of the mayor’s order.

After its approval, it will be determined when the re-routing will start.

Also expected to be implemented soon is the ordinance designating pay parking zones in Bacolod authored by Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella.

The pay parking measure is also aimed to decongest traffic volume in the city.

The streets of San Juan, Rizal, Gonzaga and Gatuslao are designated pay parking zones.

Parked vehicles will be charged P5 for the first two hours and an additional P2 for every exceeding hour, but the total fee of each vehicle will not exceed P35 a day.
