Cebu to join Coral Triangle Day on June 9

THE province of Cebu will join the Coral Triangle Day on June 9 to highlight the importance of marine conservation.

Provincial Board Member Thadeo Ouano recently issued a resolution that requests all local government units in Cebu province to celebrate Coral Triangle Day.

Ouano said on Tuesday that he is also mulling a resolution to declare June 9 every year a holiday.

Since June 9 is a Monday, the start of the opening of classes, the province-wide beach clean-ups and mangrove planting will be held on June 7.

Private sectors are also expected to join the event.

Coral Triangle is a six million-kilometer ocean expanse that contains the highest number of reef building corals. Its coral reef systems are home to thousands of whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, and six of the world's seven species of marine turtle.

Coral Triangle includes the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Island and Timor Leste.

Astrid Lim of the Coral Triangle Initiative said Central Visayas Region is the epicenter of the Coral Triangle.

Aside from Central Visayas region, Lubang, Occidental Mindoro; Cortes, Surigao del Sur; the towns of Gigaquit and Bacuag in Surigao del Norte have also organized beach clean-up and mangrove planting to celebrate Coral Triangle Day. (DDA/Sunnex)
