1 killed, 15 villages submerged in North Cotabato floods

COTABATO CITY -- Heavy downpour for two nights over the weekend killed a farmer and flooded about 15 villages in North Cotabato, officials said.

The Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) reported that a 52-year-old farmer, identified as Wilson Abinsay, died after he drowned due to flashfloods.

In Kabacan, the villages of Kayaga, Dagupan, Kuyapon, Pataan, Katidtuan and Pedtad were submerged to about knee-deep floodwater.

In Pigcawayan town, flooded was the village of Buluan, Manuangan and portions of the Cotabato-Davao highway.

Rex Saure, head of Kabacan MDRRMC, said in a radio interview that assessment was still ongoing.

In Maguindanao, the low-lying areas of Pagalungan and Pagagawan were also flooded. These areas are said to be easily flooded when the Kabacan river overflows due to heavy downpour upstream, especially beside the country’s highest peak – Mt. Apo.

The villages of Sta. Felomina, Bulakanon, Luna Sur, Luna Norte and Luayon in Makilala Municipality were also flooded on Friday night.

The MDRRMC said two families in Putok Pag-asa, Bulakanon were displaced.

The council added that about 200 trees were uprooted by rampaging waters. (PNA/Sunnex)
