Guv: Support Roxas so you can run unopposed

NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said Friday that mayors who will not support Liberal Party standard bearer Manuel Roxas II for president may be opposed in the 2016 elections.

Marañon, who chairs the United Negros Alliance (Unega), added that majority of the mayors in the province, including those from rival Love Negros, have already confirmed support for his re-election bid, and also for his running mate Representative Jeffrey Ferrer of the Fourth District.

He added that more mayors of Love Negros are expected to pledge support for him after Bago City Mayor Ramon Torres and Vice Mayor Nicholas Yulo, who are members of Love Negros, have confirmed support for him.

Pulupandan Mayor Miguel Peña also went to his office and pledged support for him, he said.

“Those who will not support Roxas will face an opponent,” Marañon said.

Among the Love Negros mayors who won’t be facing opponents from Unega are Mayor Isidro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Agustin Bascon of Himamaylan City, and Peña of Pulupandan.

The choice for mayor in Escalante City is still under negotiation, the governor said.

In Salvador Benedicto, Marxlen de la Cruz will be backed by Unega in his comeback bid for mayor.

Marañon also confirmed that in Isabela, he will support Vice Mayor Francis Malabor, who will challenge reelectionist Mayor Enrique Montilla.

In San Carlos City, they will still assess the situation, he said.

Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson had earlier said that Love Negros will not endorse any presidential bet in the 2016 elections.

“Love Negros will not be united for a (particular) presidential candidate,” he said.

However, the vice governor had already declared his support for Roxas even if his main party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition, has yet to announce the candidate it will endorse in next year’s elections.

So far, running for president aside from Roxas are Vice President Jejomar Binay of the United Nationalist Alliance and Senator Grace Poe, an independent candidate.

Lacson had said that their group in Love Negros wants everybody to have a free will in choosing who to support for president.
