Benguet tourism sites mostly culture, nature-based

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Tourism sites in the province are relatively culture and nature-based, which call for protection and preservation, a local tourism official said.

Provincial Tourism Operations Office head Clarita Prudencio said compared to other areas, the province is endowed with culture and nature-based attractions wanting for preservation and protection.

Such that in areas for promotion, Prudencio said they consider all aspects like the carrying capacity, meaning the number of people allowed for a certain area at one time is limited for manageability purposes.

In ensuring the condition of the area is preserved, Prudencio stressed they are not really after the volume of people. If an area could only accommodate 50 people, then so be it.

"When nature is gone, it is gone forever. You can never replace if it is already damaged," she said.

Lately, Benguet mountains are the sites of eco-adventures among them the Pilipinas Akyathlon and Mt. Ugo Summer Climb.

Some of the municipalities are guided by policies in protecting and preserving the existing and potential tourist vistas which may be in the form of tourism codes or ordinances like in Bakun, Kibungan, Tuba and Tublay, said Prudencio.

The towns with tourist promotions sites have their own policies but "our role is to guide them following procedures and steps to undertake before promoting a site," said Prudencio. (Susan Aro)
