Negrenses reign supreme in ALA-Cobra boxing tilt

MELVIN Gumban of Escalante City continued to box impressively and kept his unbeaten record by winning over Jason Egera via unanimous decision in the main event of the ALA-Cobra Tunay na Lakas boxing spectacular on Saturday at Mandaue City Plaza Square.

All judges favored the 23-year-old "Topgun" with 99-91, 99-91 and 98-92 scores to improve his unblemished card with 17 wins including eight knockouts. Egera dropped to 21-11 win-loss record (10 KOs).

Bacolod's pride Juren Labordo also proved why most boxing champions came from the “City of Smiles.”

"Turbo" lived up to his monicker by knocking out JP Macadumpis of General Santos in 1:59 of the first round.

Following such short workout, Labordo has accumulated 12 wins and a loss, with eight knockouts. His lone defeat was inflicted by Jaymart Toyco in the seventh round in Dumaguete City.

Other bouts saw Junior Salvador defeating Powell Balaba via split decision; Takaoki Noma and Aldrin Guara finished with a majority draw decision; Yuki Iriguchi stopped Melchor Abcede via majority decision; Peter Apolinar knocked Sonny Basanez out in second round; and Vicente Cosido dropped Holly Quinones in third.
