UM spikers rule Summerfest

THE University of Mindanao men and women volleyball teams took different routes but produced the same results in ruling the Davao City Summer Sports for Peace Festival tournament Tuesday afternoon at the UM Matina campus gym.

The UM women spikers had an easy time in beating Holy Cross of Davao College in straight sets, 25-14, 25-20, 28-26, and winning the title while the men tossers had to dig deep into their bag of tricks before outlasting HCDC in the finals, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 23-25, 15-10.

The UM men's squad relied on quick sets and combination plays to dismantle the HCDC defense in a pulsating championship showdown that lasted almost two hours.

HCDC was given up for dead after losing the first two sets, but roared back to life in the next two frames to force the decider. UM, however, was not to be denied of its triumphant campaign when it raced to an 11-2 lead in the final set and never looked back.

The UM women’s squad, led by Lady Agilas May Shiel Agton, Princess Joy Oliveros and setter Reynelyn Raterta, blasted HCDC in the afternoon’s first finals match.

The Davao Merchant Marine Academy and Jose Maria College finished third place in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

The volleyball tournament was one of the activities featured in the Davao City Summer Sports for Peace Festival organized by the Sports Development Division-City Mayor’s Office and City Tourism Office. (SDD-CMO)
