Indigent students get bags from GLF committee

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Giant Lantern Festival (GLF) Executive Committee 2011 recently distributed school bags to indigent students from different schools in the city.

GLF 2012 committee members Angelo David, Engr. Marnie Castro and Architect Yolanda Reyes gave 250 bags each to students at Sta. Lucia Elementary School, San Nicolas Integrated School and Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Integrated School.

Michelle Ong, GLF executive member, said the schools were chosen by the City Tourism Office because of the huge number of indigent students there compared to other schools in the city.

"The funds used to buy these bags were from the money acquired by the Giant Lantern committee through sponsorships during the Giant Lantern Festival three years ago," she said.

When asked why they decided to give bags instead of school supplies, Ong said, "Kapagk asi start ng klase ang usually binibili ng nanay sa anak niya ay school supplies. Ang bag parang optional na lang. Bag para at least may paglalagyan sila ng gamit."

Sta. Lucia Elementary School Principal Andrea Gutierrez said they are thankful to the committee because the bags will help the students in their daily classes. (Ashley Jesther D. Dela Peña)
