Group finalizes preparation for Asean MTB Cup

INTERNATIONAL Commissaires will hold a final dry run for Asean MTB Cup today as part of the preparation for the first leg of the Asean MTB Cup on June 13 to 15 in Danao City.

UCI Commissaire and race director Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez said that this will be the final practice for the riders to get a feel for a UCI race and the race route.

“The International Commissaires are here to oversee the whole procedure. This is like an actual race,” Rodriguez told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

UCI International Commissaires Max Mager of Singapore, Beatrice Lajawa and Geoffrey Kronenberg of Malaysia will join Rodriguez in facilitating the dry run for the cross-country and downhill routes.

“Commissaires are making sure the race would be fine-tuned to ensure safety and smoothness during the actual race,” he said. “Asian Games and World Cup standards will be followed. Timing chips with photo finish will be used.”

The first Asean MTB Cup dry run last month was won by Xterra Pro Joseph Miller, who showed glimpses of what to expect on the race. Miller, however, won’t race in the final dry run since he will be joining the Tabuelan tri.

The final dry run is expected to highlight local elites like Niño Surban, who is fresh from two UCI races in Japan, John Mier, the 2014 Philippine National Games (PNG) U23 silver medalist, and three national team female riders.

The race for the cross-country will start at 8 a.m while the downhill race is scheduled at 2 p.m. There will be transport stationed in Danao City Boardwalk at 7 a.m.

Foreign riders are expected to arrive in Danao City on June 9. (RSC)
