Bridge on full closure in 2 weeks

IF YOU think Monday's traffic jam in Matina approaching Generoso Bridge on Monday was bad, expect it to be the worst after a week or two as Generoso Bridge 2 will no longer accommodate even the single-lane traffic that it carries now.

The full closure of the bridge will happen once the equipment and materials for the bridge pilings arrive, an official of the Department of Public Works and Highways Davao Region (DPWH 11) said.

DPWH 11 officer Engineer Alvin Cabueñas, who was a guest in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao, said they are currently preparing for the replacement of the current piers with bored piles, which are sturdier compared to the current piers.

"Most of our activities right now are in preparation for the bored piling," he said.

He said they are slowly setting up the cranes and other equipment in the area.

Cabueñas said the full closure of the bridge is necessary for their equipment and personnel to be able to work and also for the safety of the motorists.

DPWH began the rehabilitation of the bridge last April 23, 2014 and allocated some P63 million for the project.

Earlier, Cabueñas said the rehabilitation of the bridge is immediate since "it might collapse any time."
