City councilor pushes probe at public markets

ILOILO City Councilor RLeone Gerochi is pushing for a joint investigation and mete out necessary sanctions against unscrupulous persons who reportedly pocketed the income of the city public markets.

The probe will be spearheaded by both the legislative and executive branches of the City Government to know exactly what is happening at the terminal and central markets and all other four city public markets here.

The City Council, in turn, approved the twin resolutions filed by Gerochi with the other resolution requesting an expeditious awarding of the market stalls to present occupants. The concern was address to the Market Committee earlier created by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

In a privilege speech at the council session on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, Gerochi said the City Council must know what is happening in aid of legislation so that they can enact measures or ordinances to provide safety nets and curve the nefarious acts especially of people connected with the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO).

The Market Committee headed by city administrator Norlito Bautista had just completed the validation of more than 1,500 market stallholders at the terminal market and is starting to validate the documents of more than 1,000 market stallholders and vendors at the central public market.

Bautista earlier said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will award the stalls to qualified vendors and stallholders after the adjudication while stalls occupied by persons without valid documents will be declared vacant and open for application for those interested to rent the stalls.

Gerochi admitted hearing reports on the activities of other persons in the collection of payments of electricity bill without receipt, occupying several stalls by one person defying the One Family One Stall policy, subleasing their stalls to other persons and collecting the rent and long time arrears, among others.
