Owwa readies for Migrants Workers Day

PREPARATIONS are underway for the celebration of the Migrant Workers Day here in the region.

Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration-Zamboanga Peninsula (Owwa-9) Regional Director Hassan Gabra Jumdain said the Migrant Workers Day celebration is set in June 21, which will be held at the Jose Rizal Memorial State University in Dapitan City.

Jumdain said this year’s celebration is anchored on the theme “Migranteng Pilipino…Magkasangga tayo sa kapakanan, kabuhayan at kalusugan mo.”

The theme gives emphasis on the welfare of every Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) across the globe, said Jumdain.

He said they are set to conduct several activities to augment awareness, strengthen livelihood and promote good health among its members and their families.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) will spearhead the conduct of a jobs fair at JRMSU to facilitate employment and fast track the meeting of jobseekers and recruitment agencies.

The jobs fair “will open more doors of opportunities for the OFWs and their dependents.”

A forum on Migrant Workers Day Act 8042 as amended by R.A. 10022 will be conducted in this city and in Zamboanga del Norte on June 17 and June 19, respectively.

The forum will be attended by Public Employment Service Office (Peso) managers, non-government organizations and the academe.

It will be followed by a signing of Memorandum of Agreement between and among the regional office of OWWA, POEA, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and other corporate, social and institutional partners.

The resource speakers of the forum will be Atty. Aysar Amilbangsa, an Associate Professor at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

The forum is pursuant to the directive of Dole Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz to enhance the delivery of services of DOLE, OWWA, POEA and Tesda to reach out to its clientele in every city and municipality in collaboration with the local government units, NGOs, academe and OFW Family Circles by establishing an OFW Help Desk in their respective areas.

Other activities such as physical exercise and fun games are also set for the recreation of the participants.
