DMMA, HCDC top summer cagefest

THE Davao Merchant Marine Academy (DMMA) and Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) emerged champions in the just-concluded Davao City Summer Sports for Peace Festival Collegiate Men's and Women's basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

The Bambino Santander coached-DMMA shocked highly-touted JMC Kings, 75-66, in men's finals as Ronald Bangoy hit 22 points and Aric Fernandez added 16.

JMC's James Vien Soriano and Kenny Riel Guibay drilled in 17 and 11 points, respectively.

HCDC, for its part, stunned University of Mindanao (UM) Lady Cardinals, 77-63, behind Kathlene Gaudiano who poured in 22 markers. Junamae Dahay had 20 and Lorelie Lhor made 16 to help lift the team's victory.

The champion teams received P8,000 cash each while the runners-up got P6,000 apiece. They also received trophies.

Bangoy was named men's most valuable player (MVP) while Gaudiano was hailed women's MVP.

HCDC's Juan Carlo Salvador was best best women's coach even as Howard Delgado of John Paul II College of Davao was cited best men's coach having showed sportsmanship and good conduct during the tournament.

The event was presented by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO). (MDC)
