Sevillano scores gold

RHENZI Kyle Sevillano won the gold medal in the Rapid Chess for U16 competition of the 2014 Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean)+ Age Group Chess Championship held in Macau.

The 15-year-old high school senior of the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) scored a total of 5.5 points as he tied with compatriot Brylle Gever Vinluan for the top spot.

Sevillano earned the gold medal because of his superior tie break points.

They also won the gold medal for the team event after collecting a total of 16.0 points with the addition of Daryl Unix Samantila’s 5.0 points.

But Sevillano failed to land a medal finish in the Blitz event as his final game against Matthew Nunbhakdi Tawin of Thailand in the final round 9 was declared null and void, leaving him at the fourth place with 5.5 points.

Sevillano was part of the Philippine squad that won the U16 competition as their combined 19.0 points finish with Daryl Unix Samantila and Brylle Gever Vinluan overwhelmed Team Vietnam’s 16.5 points.

Sevillano won the silver medal in the Standard competition.
