Female NPA rebel yields

AN AMAZON of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered after she was abandoned by her comrades at the height of a fire fight in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Norte, a military official said Monday.

Army’s First Infantry Division Public Affairs Officer-in-Charge Captain Franco Suelto identified the rebel who surrendered as Mary Sadia alias Ka Lisa, 19, Mati vilalge, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur.

Suelto said Sadia surrendered to the military forces around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Sitio Taysan in the village of Midatag, Leon Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte.

Suelto said Sadia turned over an M-16 Armalite rifle with ammunition and a rifle grenade.

Sadia revealed that she decided to surrender after she was abandoned by her comrades during a fire fight around 4:25 p.m. Saturday at Sitio Taysan in the village of Midatag, Leon Postigo.

The firefight broke out when the Alpha Company troops of the Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion chanced upon the NPA rebels while on combat operation.

A soldier was injured in the firefight that lasted for about 20 minutes after which the NPA rebels.
