THE Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) elected eight members into its board of trustees and welcomed 21 new members during its general membership meeting last June 6 at Azia Suites and Residences.
This is part of the chamber’s direction to grow itself not just in number but also in quality. MCCI now has 200 members, it said in a press statement.
The newly elected trustees are Girlie Garces of San Miguel Brewery, Beverly Dayanan of Contempo Property Holdings, Inc., Cristina Lo of Coast Pacific Manufacturing Corp., Carmel de Pio-Salvador of Global Carrier Phils., Inc., Mark Anthony Ynoc of San Remigio Properties, Glenn Anthony Soco of GA Satellite Ventures, Inc., Jeruel Roa of Center for International Education and Wilson Ng of Ng Khai Development Corp.
The incumbent trustees are Philip Tan of Wellmade Motors, Noreen Yu of APY Cane Inc., Stanley Go of Virginia Food Inc., Edgar Allan Po of Winners Plastic Corp., Vicky Dy of Adnetwork Corp., Alice Uy of JACE Handicrafts, and Michelle Co of RCBC.
The new members who pledged to be active partners in advancing MCCI’s vision and mission are Shaldan Philippines Inc., Oyster Bay Seafood, CT Concept Ent., AsiaLight Travel & Tours Inc., Nutech Marketing, Arcanys Inc., 168 Concept Accounting & Realty, Multi-Mach International Inc., Verbena Capitol Suites, Oakridge Pavilion, Passerelles Numeriques Phil. Foundation Inc., Brunch Haute Cuisin Corp., Prime Movers Total Logistics Inc., Contempo Property Holdings Inc., Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, Cebu International School, Azia Suites & Residences, Smart Communication Inc.-Cebu, The Memoriter Writing Service, Boston Hardware Inc., and Philasia Maritime Services Training Center Inc.
In his report to the members, MCCI President Philip Tan said that the fiscal year 2012 to 2013 has been a challenging year for the chamber, given the natural and manmade calamities that beset the country, including the Zamboanga siege, Bohol earthquake and typhoon Yolanda.
“These challenges tested the indomitable spirit of the Filipinos and also gave us a wake-up call on how to deal with disasters and help address climate change,” he said.
The MCCI did its share in helping the victims of the calamities by coordinating and partnering with Rotary International District 3860 and Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. in sending out relief goods; coordinating medical and dental teams from Manila through a partnership with a dental implants company; and donating fishing boats to assist in the recovery of the fishers in San Remigio.
“Looking at the brighter side, the calamities showed us the power of ordinary citizens, the private sector, especially the business community. When we come together and work as one, we can really make a difference. Let us learn from the lesson of Bohol earthquake and super typhoon Yolanda. Let us build back stronger and build better,” he said.
The MCCI is also institutionalizing the performance governance systems to professionalize the bureaucracy of the Mandaue City Government and, in the process, make the city more attractive to investors. This supports the city’s direction to improve its business processes, become ISO 9000-compliant and eventually, be ISO-accredited by 2016.
The chamber is active in the campaign for more strategic and sustainable planning using the Mega Cebu platform, which promotes long-term and collaborative planning and action toward a more sustainable city-region.
For the benefit of its member-companies, MCCI sponsored seminars on employee productivity and efficiency, corporate social responsibility, branding, and green productivity. MCCI supported the Alkansya program of the Social Security System, conducted a fellowship for its members, and organized its annual flagship project, Mandaue Business Month, last August.
During the meeting, the leaders and members updated the organization’s constitutional bylaws that were created in 1983 yet, as the chamber is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Tan considers the amending of the bylaws to be one of his legacies as MCCI president. (PR)
