2 men rob travel agency

TWO armed men robbed a travel agency on A.S. Fortuna St., Mandaue City yesterday noon, carting away four mobile phones owned by the four employees and P4,900 cash from the employees and the agency's cash drawer.

Police arrested a Daanbantayan, Cebu native less than an hour after the robbery took place at the 17 Twenty One Travel and Shop in Barangay Banilad.

Roy Malinao, 36, was seen by a witness outside the travel agency around the time of the robbery, said SPO3 Marcos Noval Jr. of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Investigation and Detection Management Branch.

The driver of the motorcycle ridden by Malinao, however, showed up at the MCPO around 6 p.m. and told the police they had nothing to do with the crime.

Jilson Totoy, 40, a resident of Barangay Talamban, and Malinao were together on a motorcycle and were followed by the police after they did not stop during a checkpoint on corner Gov. Cuenco St. and M.L. Quezon St.

The motorcycle did not have plate numbers.

Malinao was arrested outside the hardware in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City, where he and Totoy entered.

Totoy fled. He later explained at the MCPO that he left for fear of getting apprehended for he has no driver's license and was not wearing a helmet.

An employee of the travel agency went to the MCPO and told the police that Totoy and Malinao were not the ones who robbed them at gunpoint.

Lovely Santillan, 22, said the suspects were younger than Totoy and Malinao. She estimated the men who robbed them to be in their early 30s or late 20s.

But the police still detained Malinao because the police recovered a knife from his possession. He will be charged for illegal possession of a deadly weapon.

Totoy was issued a citation ticket for driving without license and without a helmet.

Noval said the police may still file a case against Malinao as the possible lookout of the robbers, if the witness who saw him outside the travel agency executes an affidavit. He said the witness was hesitant to execute an affidavit.

The police have yet to identify the armed robbers.
