Ifugao steps up IEC on waste management

LAGAWE, Ifugao -- The Provincial Government has stepped up information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on solid waste management in all the urban barangays in the province.

Arlynne Camat, OIC of the Environment Management Division of the Provincial Agriculture and Environment Office (PAENRO), said the IEC project is spearheaded by the newly reconstituted Ifugao Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (IPSWMB).

The activity came about to address concern that local government units had relapsed during the past months in their primary duty to provide a systematic and environment-friendly management of solid waste from the source or the households that involve waste storage, transfer, processing, treatment and disposal.

Camat said the IEC was intended to be able to improve the knowledge and attitude of the barangay households and residents on solid waste management and make it as part of their way of life in the management of their garbage from the source to its final disposal involving the practice of segregation, reduction, recycling, re-use and composting of waste to reduce the volume of waste to be managed at the disposal area.

It also aims to acquaint the stakeholders on the existing municipal ordinances related to solid waste management, encourage active involvement in the discussion of issues and concerns affecting our environment and its effect to climate change and come up with appropriate solutions.

IEC was already conducted in the municipalities of Lamut and Lagawe. (Daniel Codamon)
