Villanueva, Cabalquinto upbeat about their respective title fights

LORENZO “Thunderbolt” Villanueva and Adonis Cabalquinto are upbeat about their respective title fights set on June 28 at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

Vying for the vacant Asean Boxing Federation belt, left-handed Villanueva is pitted against southpaw Indonesian Hendric Barongasay.

While the reigning Philippine Super Lightweight champion Adonis “The Undertaker” Cabalquinto is set to defend his title once more against the Laguna native challenger, Giovani Rota.

“Nindot gyud ni among laban anikay aggressive na fighter man to siya (With his aggressive style of play, I’m expecting a tough fight with him)”, says Villanueva, pertaining to his opponent Barongasay.

Villanueva, 27, shared that he has been doing extensive training for almost three months already. “Naga-jogging ko sayo sa buntag padulong sa Eden (I jog every morning going up to Eden)”, he added.

Coach Richard Dimaluan also added that he strictly monitors Villanueva’s training for him not to be overworked. With Villanueva’s work ethic, Dimaluan believes that they have a fighting chance against the Indonesian fighter.

As for Cabalquinto, he went jogging once a week for almost 13 kilometers in the last three months. “Basta ingun nila ang mga left-handed na mga boxer kay kusgan man (They always say that left-handed boxers are strong),” he added. He hopes that on June 28, he can prove that his left hand is strong.

Both Giovani Rota and Hendrick Balongasay are expected to arrive here in Davao by Wednesday.

Sonshine Sports Management, meanwhile, hopes for a huge turnout of spectators. (KRP)
