Baguio mayor assures ECC for sanitary landfill

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan assured compliance with environmental requirements in case the development of Engineered Sanitary Landfill plan in Sto. Tomas is pushed.

Sto. Tomas as an identified Environmentally Critical Area (ECA) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera Administrative Region requires an Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC) before any project or any activities occur in the area.

"If we pass all of these, that's the only time na ilalagay natin yung solid waste disposal system natin on that area," Domogan said.

Mayor Domogan clarified the ESL plan must be carefully studied so as to avoid intrusion, environmental violation and other land issues in the area.

In this regard, he reported the city government is closely coordinating with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau and even the National Solid Waste Commission for consultations and to come up with the necessary studies and design.

"I hope na from the moment it passes all the criteria, katulong natin sila to ensure na yung ating compliance sa ating environmental laws ay talagang nandiyan," he stressed.

Moreover, he added the Plan B in Sablan in case the ESL plan in Sto. Tomas is not permitted, will have to undergo the same process from the consultations, feasibility study and compliance with the requirements.

He noted it is important to identify the exact location for the projected ESL first and the conduct of feasibility study and compliance with the necessary requirements will follow.

The city mayor ended the area for the Integrated Solid Waste Disposal System will serve as solid waste management complex where the Environmental Recycling System machines of the city along with biodigesters will also be set up.
