A ONE-YEAR-OLD girl drowned in the sea some 10 meters from their house in Sitio Seaside, Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, Monday morning.

SPO1 Alan Pantaleon of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office Homicide Section said Suzette Villagonzalo didn't notice Mary Jane, her youngest daughter, toddling toward the sea past 6 a.m.

Villagonzalo said she had nine other children to attend to at their shanty under the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.

Suzette told the police she was busy preparing her children for school. Neighbors called the mother's attention after they saw the girl's body floating in the water.

They brought the girl to shore and tried to revive her but to no avail.

Mary Jane was rushed to the Our Lady of the Rule General and Maternal Hospital but she was already dead.

Pantaleon said the girl might have been playing on the beach when waves caused by a passing fastcraft swept her into the sea.

Mary Jane would have turned two in October.

Pantaleon said the mother will not face criminal charges, but she may have to undergo some intervention programs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. (RSB)
