Finals clash in Cesafi basketball begins

AFTER 15 days of rest, the championship protagonists for the high school division title will start their best-of-three championship series for the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at 5:15 p.m. today in the Cebu Coliseum.

Defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles will try to keep the title against the underdogs but hard-fighting University of Cebu Baby Webmasters in a three-game series that is expected to be a dog fight from start to finish.

The main game, on the other hand, will feature the best-of-three series for third place in college between the deposed champions Southwestern University Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars at 6:45 p.m.

Although SHS-AdC will be playing without Andrew Velasco, who will be sidelined because of a hand injury, the Magis Eagles still have their meanest weapons – Jed Colonia and Eroll Pastor – who are expected to burn the hoops in fast breaks and half court offense.

Coach Rommel Rasmo will also lean on his veterans Phil Renzo Calumpang, Alex Visser and Travis Mantua along with reliable Patrick Wilson Yu, Wayne Kirby Bersaluna and John Benedict Yu and Benedict Andre Chua.

This combination has proven to be the main reason for the unbeaten run of the Magis Eagles this season.

UC, on the other hand, will bank on Luigi Gabisan, Jason Abejo and Froilan Mangubat in an effort to reclaim the title they once held in 2008.
