The month of July is just around the corner. We all know that the period is full of historical events. On the spread are the July 4th Fil-American Friendship Day in the country and Independence Day celebration in the United States of America and the observance of Philippines – Japan Friendship Day on July 23. These are the three major international red letter dates we have in the past years been celebrating city wide with jubilation on friendship bridge. As of this writing, I don’t not know if the city authorities have already prepared separate programs for the special events. Of course, the National Correspondents Club of Baguio will actively observe July 4. With pardonable pride, the NCCB conceptualized, initiated and coordinated the construction of the Architect Daniel Burnham Monument at Burnham Park and the Col. Lyman Kennon Monument at Kennon Road beside the BCPO checkpoint several years ago. The historic monument markers honoring the American Baguio City pioneers were constricted under my modest leadership in cooperation with friends, the city government authority and the Department of Public Works and Highways. Again, thank you to our generous supporters for their “Bayanihan Spirit” of caring and sharing! May their tribe increase!
In the BARP calendar, the month of July is also historic, very significant and very important. It was 15 years ago, on July 15 when the foundation came to life according to its President – CEO Prof, Federico Balanag. To cut the long story short making it simple but sweet, the anniversary celebration this year will be held on July 27 at the Burnham Park sports center. The BARP Special Events Committee with yours truly as the chairman prepared the series of activities to commemorate the occasion following the president’s request. BOT’s Monroe Taclawan, chairman of the Committee on Awards and Recognition and Ferdie Balanag, our liaison officer are working with me to insure the success of the celebration. There are three parts of the day’s offering namely – the presentation of the prestigious BARP Kafagway Journalism Leadership Service Awards, the presentation of mutual benefits and a cultural show featuring the talents of BARP elderlies from its various districts. A free raffle of prizes to those in attendance will cap the affair.
According to Taclawan, the list of journalists in the award honor roll were selected from the tri-media aggrupation. From the print media are Roderick Osis, managing editor of Sun.Star Baguio; Hanah Lacsamana, staff member of the Baguio Midland Courier; Lito Camero Jr., managing editor of Amianan Balita Ngayon and Marilou Giueb, correspondent of Business Mirror and a columnist of the Baguio Chronicle. From the broadcast personalities are Jordan Tablac, station manager of Bombo Radyo Philippines DZWX Baguio; Alejandro Amadeo, station manager of Radyo ng Bayan Baguio; Primo Agatep, DZRH correspondent for Baguio; Mary Langpawan, anchor, Mountain Province Broadcasting Corporation – DZWT. From the television cast are Kay Carmen Zalavaria, reporter, ABS-CBN TV Patrol Northern Luzon and videographer-reporter Darious Bajo of GMA Balitang Amianan – Dagupan. The journalism awards program of the BARP is held every year since 2009 in partnership with the NCCB and the Philippine Information Agency – CAR. The individual awardees will be formally notified by the sponsors of the project shortly.
Unfortunately, last Tuesday morning (June 24), I accidentally lost my wallet at the billing section of the Baguio water district office. I was there to settle our water bills. Very important documents including my SSS ID card, my driver’s license, senior citizen ID among other are in the wallet. I pray and hope and at the same time earnestly request the founder to please return to me the important documents, either in person or at the OSCA office at the City Social Welfare and Development Office at the Silungan Center, radio station DZWT 540 at the Baguio Cathedral compound, Bombo Radyo station, or at Luisa’s Café at Session road, care of Nora, the cashier. Salamat po.
