SONNY BOY "The Bullet" Jaro and Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva of Team Philippines knocked out their respective Indonesian opponents, Ichal Tobida and Hendrick Barongsay, as they emerged as victors in Boxing Revolution I held last June 28 at the Almendras Gymnasium and Recreation Center, Davao City.
The newly crowned Asia Boxing Federation (ABF) Bantamweight champion Jaro, 32, added yet another title to his collection after sending Tobida kneeling to the canvass, prompting referee Bruce Mctavish to call it off, earning Jaro a technical knockout win against Tobida.
In the post-fight press conference, Jaro said Tobida was tough to deal with.
"Hindi siya tinatablan ng mga pinapakawalan kong body shots kay matibay talaga siya", he said.
In the opening round of the fight, Jaro opted to go offensive by connecting with hard body punches forcing Tobida was forced to defend. Tobida, however, withstood the barrage of Jaro's hooks and countered with combinations.
Tobida's strategy proved effective in the second fram, as he connected with a solid left hook that sent Jaro stagerring inside the ring. Tobida seemed primed to upset Jaro in his home country by pummeling him with combinations but slipped and lost his momentum while Jaro was saved by the bell.
In the sixth frame, Jaro finally regained his composure and went back to attacking. Jaro controlled the fight from there, prompting Tobida to circle the ring until Jaro finally knocked the wind out of him with a powerful shot to his right rib.
With the win, Jaro improved his tally to 37 wins (26 via KO), 13 losses, and five draws while Tobida dropped to 10 wins (8 via KO) and 12 losses. Jaro also bared that he is eyeing the WBC Superflyweight belt as his next target.
For the co-main event, Villanueva quickly ended the fight in the first round against Barongsay with a flashy left hook sending the Indonesian down for the count, earning him a controversial TKO win against Barongsay.
After Referee Bruce Mctavish announced Villanueva as the winner, Barongsay's manager Eric Irawan protested that his fighter was tangled with the ropes, making him unable to stand.
Mctavish, however, stood firm with his decision and ruled it a knockout.
Villanueva improved his record to 25 wins (22 via KO) and 1 loss. Barongsay, on the other hand, fall to 26 (16 via KO), 16 losses, and three draws.
For the Philippine Junior Welterweight championship bout, Talaingod native Adonis Cabalquinto defended his title with a knockout against Bukidnon challenger Giovane Rota.
The bout ended in the 7th round when Cabalquinto sent a left hook to Rota's face to put him to sleep.
Cabalquinto's retained his perfect record with 16 wins (9 via KO. For Giovane Rota, his record went down to 7 wins (4 via KO) and 7 losses.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Counciler Jimmy Dureza both graced the Boxing Revolution I event which was presented by Sonshine Sports Management.
