Comelec holds voter’s registration for inmates

THE Commission on Election (Comelec) has registered a total of 298 inmates during the satellite voter’s registration conducted on Tuesday at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-administered Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC).

First district election officer lawyer Stephen Cañete said 257 of the 298 are male inmates while the remaining 41 are females.

Cañete said 103 of the 257 male inmates are residents of this city’s first district and the other 154 of the second district.

Cañete said they have so far registered 70 percent of the more than 1,000 inmates at the ZCRC.

The registration of inmates Tuesday was witnessed by no less than Comelec Commissioner Luie Tito Guia.

Guia is the designated Chairperson of the Comelec’s Committee on Detainee Voting.

Cañete said they will conduct another voter’s registration at the ZCRC on July 14 in a bid to register the rest of the inmates.

He said inmates who were already registered with them were also be given the opportunity to update their registration status.

He said there are around 250 inmates-- 200 males and 50 females -- have registered in previous registration they conduct at the ZCRC. (Bong Garcia)
