Typhoid-like cases up to 89

PATIENTS showing typhoid-like symptoms in Borbon increased from 82 to 89 cases last Monday, June 30, but reported incidents were fewer after a joint mass treatment initiated by the Provincial Health Office and the Regional Epidemiological Service Unit (Resu) last July 1.

Capitol’s Health Education Promotion Officer Wilfredo Salgado Jr. said that of the previous 82 cases showing typhoid-like symptoms, three were confined at the Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital. The three are tested positive of typhoid salmonella.

Consultation

On Tuesday, July 1, Salgado said the Provincial Health Office and Resu personnel conducted simultaneous consultation and administered chloramphenicol to patients showing typhoid-like symptoms in affected barangays.

They also urged residents to boil their drinking, cooking and household-use water, if they cannot afford to buy mineral water.

Chlorination of water sources, which started last week, in affected Barangays Lugo, Cajel and Clavera, is going on, said Salgado.

As of yesterday, there are no reported cases of typhoid-like symptoms, he said.

Salgado said the “fever” outbreak, affecting Barangays Lugo, Clavera and Cajel in Borbon, is now contained.

Mortality

A nine-year-old boy from Deca Homes, Barangay Tungkil, Minglanilla died in the hospital last June 21, said Salgado.

Sun.Star Superbalita identified the fatality as Kyle Raven España of Phase 4 Deca Homes.

Salgado warned Cebu residents of a possible start of dengue this month, with the onset of the rainy season.

He also noted a grassy and flooded area at the back of Tungkil Elementary and High School, which is near Deca homes where the child lived.

Last June 20 and 21, the province conducted misting in the area, he said.

A misting operation includes spraying of insecticides.
