Cop nabbed for extorting from detainee

A JAIL officer of Bacolod City Police Station (BCPO) 2 was arrested for extorting from an inmate during an entrapment operation inside the station Tuesday afternoon.

Arrested was Police Officer 1 Nestor Madelo while his two colleagues, whose names are being withheld, are at-large.

Senior Superintendent Melchor Coronel, officer-in-charge of BCPO, sought the assistance of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) after he received a complaint that three personnel of Police Station 2 were allegedly extorting money from one of the detainees.

Inspector Renoli Bagayao, head of CIDG-Bacolod, said Madelo was arrested after receiving the marked money.

Police recovered from Madelo’s possession P8,500 worth of marked money, Glock 17 issued firearms, a wallet, and two cellular phones.

Bagayao said Madelo and his two colleagues asked for P10,000 from suspect Rey Abindan, who was arrested for illegal drugs last Sunday.

They initially asked for P10,000, but the amount was later reduced to P8,500, the police said.

Abindan’s wife, Froebel Gee, said that after her husband was arrested Sunday morning, he was detained at the lock-up cell of Police Station 2 located inside the BCPO compound.

The policemen then asked for P10,000 for his release, she said.

Since Abindan’s wife could not produce the money, she and her brother-in-law sought the assistance of Coronel to expose the illegal activity of Police Station 2 personnel.

Coronel said that when he checked the logbook of Police Station 2, the name of the suspect was not recorded.

He added that the policemen apparently did not record Abindan’s case so that they could extort money from his family.

Coronel also ordered the relief of Madelo’s two companions and they will be assigned to the BCPO headquarters. Both of them will be disarmed.

The BCPO chief said that he is thankful to the complainant for exposing the illegal activity of the concerned policemen, adding that he will not tolerate erring policemen and will seek their dismissal from the Philippine National Police service.
