IT’S one of those times when we older adults would say, I wish we had that during our time. It’s the University Fair where schools were gathered to set up booths, show what they have, and even given a time to present what their courses and offerings are.
I walked into the one over the weekend after being snagged by my high school art teacher, Philippine Women’s College of Davao’s Mrs. Brenda Z. Barba, at a mall in Matina. It was the last day though.
There were several schools there including De La Salle University Manila, University of Santo Tomas, Silliman University, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, University of the Philippines-Mindanao, Philippine Military Academy, University of the Immaculate Concepcion, Philippine Women's College, Davao Doctors College, the Manila-based SOFA Design Institute and Raffles Design Institute. The ADDU booth even had a male and female student dressed up as knights.
It was funny how friends of the knights were busy fanning the two, but would quickly stop and disappear from sight when someone takes a photo. That was what happened when I raised my cellphone to take a photo. The “fanners” just skittered away.
In high school, a generation and more ago, the schools went to us in the classroom. But you know how it is in the classroom. You are there with your classmates and it feels like a recitation of sorts, you can hardly bring yourself to ask the questions you’d want to ask. Ergo, you just listen.
The booth type, manned by students and faculty, however, makes it less intimidating and I was seeing young ones walking up and asking both for information and for pamphlets. That was cool.
Inside the space boxed out by the booths were students listening to someone onstage talking about their programs complete with videos and slideshows. Mrs. Barba said they were given five minutes to present.
That’s concise enough. Anyway, there’s the booth to get the pamphlets from and yes, ask your questions when you find it most uncomfortable to stand up and ask amid the crowd.
It must be fun to have the whole menu to choose from. Yes, I really wish we had that during our time.
