SWU stays on top

THE Southwestern University (SWU) volleyball team won its two assignments yesterday to remain on top of the girls division of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Volleyball Batang Pinoy Qualifiers in the Aznar Coliseum.

The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) champion SWU first won against St. Theresa's College (STC), 25-13, 25-10 in its morning assignment then against Abellana National School, 25-10, 25-14 in the afternoon assignment.

SWU leads the division with a 5-0 win-loss record, while STC suffered its third loss in four matches.

ANS, on the other hand, seemed to be having a bad day as they suffered two losses.

Aside from SWU in the morning game, they bowed to the University of Cebu (UC) in a tight three-setter, 17-25, 26-24, 23-25.

It was UC's first win and it now holds a 1-2 record.

According to SWU head coach Jordan Paca, even though they are leading in the girls division, they will not be too complacent with the presence of 11th edition Shakey's girls Central and Eastern Visayas champion team of University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), who beat Palarong Pambansa campaigner University of San Carlos (USC) in yesterday's game opener, 25-23, 25-18, 28-26.

USC may have struggled in the morning mission and lost but got lucky as they easily won against University of Southern Philippines (USPF) in their afternoon game. USJ-R and USC are now tied with 2-1.

Meanwhile, despite losing, Abellana head coach Karem Datig liked the idea of the qualifying round for Batang Pinoy because last year, there was no girls representative in the regionals.

“This is a very good idea. Last year, we only had a boys team representing Cebu City composed of players from Abellana, UC and Pardo. Sayang ang slot sa girls last year wala tay team,” said Datig.

The boys team won the championship in the Visayas finals but did not make it to the final round of the nationals.

Datig hopes with this year's qualifying round, they can form a team to represent Cebu City in the Visayas Regional Batang Pinoy set in Kalibo, Aklan this October.

Games will resume this morning at 9 a.m.
