SWU, USJ-R advance

WHILE the top teams Southwestern University (SWU) and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) girls teams have secured semifinals berths in the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Volleyball Batang Pinoy Qualifiers, two more teams need to fight it out for the last two semis slot.

The Abellana National School (ANS) girls’ team showed grit to recover from a disappointing performance last Saturday to turn in a strong one yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

After losing two matches the other day, ANS made up for it with two wins yesterday to keep its title bid alive.

ANS eliminated St. Theresa’s College, 25-10, 12-25,25-21, and secured another victory via default over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

The wins kept ANS’s bid alive as it improved with a 3-3 win-loss record.

Meanwhile, SWU and USJ-R locked horns in a thrilling match that saw SWU beating USJ-R, 15-25, 25-16, 27-25, for SWU cementing the top spot with a 6-0 win-loss record.

USJ-R advanced to the semis with a 4-2 card.

Meanwhile, the reigning Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) secondary boys division champion USC secures the top spot in the semi-finals next week in the boys division with a 3-0 win-loss record. USC is followed by ANS with 3-1 after pummeling Pardo School, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18. Pardo is at third, while Barrio Luz is at forth.

According to USC head coach Jonrey Sasing he is confident of their chances of winning this tournament and ultimately representing Cebu City in the Batang Pinoy Visayas Finals in October.

“Daku among chance but dili lang mo kompyansa kay kusog sad ang Abellana team,” said Sasing.

Because the tournament is for ages 15 and below, most of Sasing’s players were not able to play in this tournament. He only fielded two of his senior players Jay Tada-Tada and Gwen Dharyll Guy.

“The rest of the team are first year high school students but they are no stranger to volleyball. Five of them are graduates from Colegio del Santo Nino (CSN),” said Sasing.

CSN is known for its strong volleyball program and usually represents Cebu City not only in the regional Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association but in the Palarong Pambansa as well.
