PH loses Fonacier

TALK ‘N Text Tropang Texters gunner Larry Fonacier begged off from continuing his stint with the Gilas Pilipinas National squad, citing nagging injuries as reason.

Gilas head coach Chot Reyes said the 6’2” guard out of Ateneo de Manila Univeristy Blue Eagles has been playing through various foot and back injuries that has been bothering him for the past two years.

“It is with deep sadness that we have to accept Larry Fonacier’s request to beg off from the Gilas pool for the meantime. Unknown to many, Larry has been playing through a variety of foot and back injuries that have bothered him the past two years; and it is only his great dedication that has prevented him from taking any time off. However, the rigors of playing almost non-stop in the PBA and national team for the past 3 years has taken its toll, leaving Larry with no recourse but to accede to his doctors orders for complete rest and rehabilitation,” Reyes said in a press statement.

The known “Baby Face Assassin,” was one of the vital cogs of Reyes during Gilas’ silver medal finish in the Fiba Asia Men’s Championship last year. That finish earned

the Philipppines a ticket to the Fiba World Championship in Spain this Aug. 30.

With Fonacier out of the pool, Reyes is left with only 16 players when they will leave today for a two-week training camp in Miami, USA.
