THE Department of Agriculture (DA) office in Western Visayas will honor 11 outstanding individuals and groups as awardees of the Regional Gawad Saka Award 2014 on July 30 in glittering ceremonies at the Iloilo Midtown Hotel.
DA Regional Director Larry Nacionales identified the awardees in different categories, and three will compete for the national awards in Metro Manila by October this year.
This year’s regional Gawad Saka winners are Ramon S. Uy Jr. of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental as Outstanding Agriculture Farmer, Resty John O. Suerto of Bago City, Negros Occidental as Outstanding Young Farmer, and Rudy G. Golez of Buenavista, Guimaras as Outstanding Coconut Farmer.
The three will represent the region in the national competition in Metro Manila.
The other regional winners are the Sipalay City FARMC of Sipalay City, Negros Occidental as Outstanding Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council; Gilson C. Yap of Oton, Iloilo as Outstanding High Value Crops Farmer (Fruits); Hansel T. Montaño of Isabela, Negros Occidental as Outstanding Corn Farmer; Herminia I. Decaniel of Bago City, Negros Occidental as Outstanding Sugarcane Farmer; Johnny N. Nievares of Miagao, Iloilo as Outstanding Farm Family; Federation of Hamtic, Antique Rural Improvement Club as Outstanding Rural Improvement Club; Southern Iloilo Area Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Oton as Outstanding Small Farmers Organization; and Rodelia O. Panganiban of Silay City, Negros Occidental as Outstanding High Value Crops Farmer (Vegetables).
Nacionales said the yearly event is a manifestation of the high interest of farmers in Western Visayas to love and enjoy their farm and agricultural endeavors as they continue providing food and services to the people of the region.
Nacionales said the winners contributed their share in nation building by assuring food security and sufficiently. (LCP)
