God’s compassionate love elicits trust in the Life of Mother Ignacia

TRUST is synonymous with faith or unswerving confidence.

Most essential in trust involves perception of another person’s honesty, integrity, reliability or a solid sense of justice. When these elements are perceived or recognized as possessed by somebody, the person becomes credible. When we look up to Almighty God, there is a feeling of awe that transcends description.

His credibility is perfect without equal. His trustworthiness emanates from His great love for humankind. To save humankind is the reason for sending us His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

In fulfillment of His mission from the Father, Christ lived for us. He died for us. He obeyed wholeheartedly the Father’s will to bring salvation to us. No wonder, the Father said to Him: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye Him.” Truly everything He does, he does it to the full. What He says, He never falters. He exemplifies in His whole being whatever He teaches us. As the Father loves us, Christ does likewise in full sincerity. With Christ the will of the Father is first and foremost. “My food is to do the will of the Father.” Nothing can be truer than that. He never compromises. He evokes our trust in Him because He assures us of His love. Love is His covenant with us. We see Christ reaching out to the needy with compassion – with great love. From this compassionate love emerges the trust of Venerable Ignacia in the God she serves.

In the Ignacian OPPTIC (Openness to the Holy Spirit, Pondering Heart of Mary,Perseverance, Trust in God’s loving mercy, Intimacy with Christ and Courage and Creativity) trust follows her perseverance. Such trust springs from God’s loving mercy. S. Maria Anicia Co, RVM in her book on Mother Ignacia writes about this trust as follows: “Mother Ignacia and the beatas did not live a life of comfort and convenience. They were poor. They were not sure where to get food for their next meal but they were not discouraged. They survived by working and supporting themselves by the labor of their hands. Mother Ignacia and her beatas experienced in their life of insecurity the great providence of God who generously gave them what they needed through the fruits of their work or through benefactors. It was trust in God that enabled her and the beatas to endure their hardships and mature in faith in the midst of difficult situations.”

Drawing from their experience, one can see Mother Ignacia leading her community in the spirit of faith. They saw God’s hand providing them with whatever they needed. Unflinchingly they surmounted the burdensome circumstances they encountered on their journey to Him. Completely they trust in their provident God.

Although Venerable Ignacia’s calling was to live in solitude, she could not refuse the women who were attracted to her way of life to join her. Living in community ran counter to her dream for solitude but her complete trust in God made her see the will of the Divine Majesty. Trustingly she discovered her true belonging to God. Such discovery paved the way for opening the doors of the beaterio to everyone regardless of color and race thereby making them share in the experience of uniting one’s self to God in loving trust and compassion. – Ang ULIRAN January-March 2014, Official Newsletter of Mother Ignacia Movement
