Top guns dominate

THE Southwestern University (SWU) girls dumped University of San Carlos (USC) in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14 to win the title of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Volleyball Batang Pinoy Qualifiers at the Aznar Coliseum.

The USC boys team, on the other hand, beat the gritty team of Team Pardo also in a three-setter win, 25-16, 25-18, 25-17.

Both the SWU girls team and USC boys squad were the league leaders leading up to yesterday’s finals.

During the finals between USC and SWU girls, the winning point came from an attack from SWU’s Marit Krystelle Castillo, which USC failed to save.

USC was powered by Roby Claire Villaceran who displayed several impressive attacks, but it was not enough to topple the reigning Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation (Cesafi) girls champion team.

SWU banked on Lorene Grace Toring who scored several kills. She got the needed assists from defenders from Mary Angielou Castillo, Lou Kathleen Penales, Cristey Ann Sucalit, Chariza Mae Rico, Francius Muycah Go, Rosyll Rosal, Kate Michelle Obenita, Crishell

Mae Suba-an, Gae Marie Alferez and Junabelle Gempero.

SWU girls and the USC boys volleyball team will be representing Cebu City in the Batang Pinoy Visayas Leg this October in Aklan.

According to CCSC volleyball coordinator Jordan Paca, who is also the SWU head coach, they will start their training for the Batang Pinoy right after the Milo Little Olympics, which starts next week. The tournament will run for two weekends.

“This tournament is also a good tune-up for the teams in preparation for the Milo Little Olympics,” said Paca.
