USC set to keep title

FRESH from winning the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Volleyball Batang Pinoy Qualifiers, the University of San Carlos (USC) secondary boys team is all geared up to defend their title in the Milo Little Olympics-Visayas Leg set to kick off this Friday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

This year’s girls and boys secondary volleyball will be at the Sacred Heart School (SHS) Ateneo de Cebu while the elementary games will be at the old SHS campus on Gen. Maxilom Ave.

“After sa CCSC, we’ll focus on the Milo Little Olympics with the hope to defend our title,” said USC head coach Jonrey Sasing.

Sasing said they will have to pass through the eye of the needle again as several strong contenders will be breathing down their necks, such as the University San Jose Recoletos (USJR), Cabancalan National High School, Mandaue Comprehensive National High School and the Abellana National School.

However, compared with the previous years that used the game format single elimination, organizers this year limited the number of participants to lessen their pressure of getting easily eliminated.

“We still haven’t received the game format, but most likely what will be used is the round robin format, but dili lang gyud mi mokompyansa and treat each game like a championship game (But we won’t leave it to chance),” said Sasing.

Meanwhile, Visayas Leg organizer Ricky Ballesteros said they will be using state-of-the-art facilities in this tournament to serve as benchmark after being awarded for three consecutive years as the best organizer for Milo in the entire country.

Ballesteros said sepak takraw and badminton will be done in Metrosports, the lawn tennis elementary matches will be at the Alta Vista covered court, while the secondary competition will be at the Citigreen.

Ballesteros also hopes that Iloilo will bring in more swimmers and players in athletics.

“We are hoping that Iloilo will bring in the best athletes in their track and swimming. NCR who is the defending overall champion banks on their swimmers while our strength is in the ball games,” said Ballesteros.
