HEAVY rains spawned by Typhoon Jose and a multiple-vehicle collision along C5-Kalayaan Road in Makati City caused heavy traffic in major thoroughfares in Metro Manila Monday morning.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that aside from the downpour, traffic was brought to a standstill along the southbound portion of C5-Kalayaan Road after a 14-wheeler dump truck carrying sand plowed through seven other vehicles around 4 a.m.
The accident happened when the truck parked in a steep portion of the highway lost its break and crashed into other vehicles.
It hit a six-wheeler truck, which hit three cabs, a closed van, a sport utility vehicle and a private sedan.
MMDA said the smash-up killed Richard Parado, 24 and injured seven people.
Motorists going to the cities of Makati, Marikina, Pasig, Paranaque, Quezon, Taguig and Valenzuela usually take the C5-Kalayaan road rather than taking the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa), which is already known for traffic congestions, especially during rush hours.
The affected portion of the highway was cleared around 10:30 a.m.
Travellers were urged to take alternative routes as several roads, such as, the southbound lane of Edsa from Aurora Avenue in Cubao Quezon City to Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City, the southbound and northbound lanes of C5 from Katipunan through the roads leading to the University of the Philippines (UP) and vice versa.
Netizens who experienced the heavy traffic on the first word and school day of the week took to Twitter their reaction to the monstrous traffic jam.
