THE University of Cebu (UC) showed up with the best squad in the taekwondo event and bagged six gold medals in the 2014 Milo Little Olympics-Visayas in Cebu City.
UC won five out of the six golds in girls division courtesy of Mayn Yengele Coran, Aila Marie Lepon, Veronica Garces, Andrae Lim, and Loralee Natividad. Warren Jan Rama chipped in the lone title from the boy’s category.
Aside from the gold medals, UC also bagged three silvers and two bronze medals. Sal Luiji Estrada got a silver in the boy’s featherweight, while in the distaff side, Marie Hanz Espina and Kissha Barro added two silvers from the girl’s division.
UC won 11 medals in the secondary division, while the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) four medals.
Meanwhile, the St.John’s Institute of Bacolod City was all smiles heading home with three gold medals snatched in the elementary division.
Meanwhile in chess, Subangdaku Elementary School and Malabuyoc Elementary School cruised to the top in the elementary division, beating last’s year’s champion USC-BED in the and boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.
In the secondary division, USC-BED took the girls title, while the University of Cebu took the women’s title.
In tennis, there are new champions in the girls and boys elementary division.
Naga Central Elementary School, a first-timer, won against Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 2-1.
Venz Anton Louise Alforque beat Cesar Kristofer Salimbangon, 8-4. in the first singles and Eric Louis Longakit and Klein Russel Canete blanked Manuel Plopenio and Franco Englis, 8-0, in the doubles.
John Adrian Kho won the second singles for Ateneo against James Ethan Quino, 7-5, but it was too late.
“This is the first time that we joined the Milo tournament and we came here not just for exposure but we also aimed to win,” said head coach Crisanto Y. Caranzo.
Caranzo added that his team exposures in the different age group tournaments over the summer as well as the annual summer tennis clinics provided by Mayor Val Chiong helped the team.
In the girls division, Danao City Central School won against Naga Central ES, 2-1, despite losing the first singles match.
Ysabelle Gian lost against Phoebe Jane Abayan, 8-1, but Shedel Gica and Noella Ramos beat Hannah Faith Tapic and Beatrix Maine Paner in doubles, 8-4, and Jindel Jopia clinched the win against Marielle Kaye Calolo, 8-2. (RSC/With ISL)
