KaRunsa for a cause

JUNIOR athletes of Danao City will have something to look forward to as they will be the beneficiaries of the run dubbed KaRunsa Danao City slated on Sept. 14 in Danao City.

The Danao City Sports Committee included the running event in the calendar of activities of the Karansa Festival.

Karansa is a festival in honor of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva, the patron saint of Danao City. It started in 2007.

The proceeds of the race will be used to buy sports equipment that will be used by the local athletes.

“Danao City has been a host of many sporting events, and we would like to add another one to that as part of the festival,” Danao Vice Mayor Ramon “Red” Durano VI said.

“We have chosen to hold a running event because there is great interest in running in the community.”

The Danao City athletes had respectable finishes in the Milo Little Olympics last weekend, dominating the table tennis and pulling off impressive finishes in other events.

According to Danao City Sports Committee Head Jerald Almendras, approximately 30 junior athletes in the elementary and secondary level are going to benefit from this event.

The organizers are expecting around 800 participants for the race, and they are calling on the participation of new and elite runners. Technical race director Bienvinido Probadora said that 85 percent of the route is on the road which is tailor-made for the new runners. The organizers will also provide two buses to pick up participants that are far from Danao City.

The footrace features the open 21-kilometer, 12K, 6K,3K and 1.5K walk. Gun start will be at 4:30 a.m. After the runners cross the finish line, they will be served Danao’s specialty ‘tinap-anan’. Around P50,000 worth of cash prizes will be given away to the top runners.

Registration fee is at P700 for the 21K, P500 for the 12K, P450 for the 6K, P350 for the 3K, and P250 for the 1.5K walk inclusive of singlet, race bib and refreshments. The 12K and 21K participants will also get gift packs, while all finishers in the 21K will receive a finisher’s medal.
