Rookie saves UV Green Lancers in crunch time

ROOKIE forward Alwyn Aguirre finished with just eight points but five of it came in the last 69 seconds, towing the University of the Visayas Green Lancers to a 70-68 escape over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

This afternoon, two unbeaten powerhouse high school teams, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles and the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers will take a shot for solo leadership at 5:15 p.m., while the University of San Carlos Warriors will try to keep a strong grip of the second place when they face the University of Cebu Webmasters at 6:45 p.m.

The Green Lancers looked headed for a blowout victory as they made a good start by holding the Jaguars to just eight points while dropping 27 in the first quarter.

However, UV slowly showed its weakness and USJ-R crept back. Kevin Villafranca sank two free throws to get the Jaguars closer, 62-60, in the final 2:38.

However, Aguirre gave coach Felix “Donbel” Belano a five-point breather when he converted a conventional three-point play off a foul by Villafranca a minute and 30 seconds later.

Villafranca cut it to three with two free throws 10 seconds later but UV got a morale boosting two-handed slam by Jeffakins Aguara. James Regaldo sank a jumper but Aguirre added two more free throws.

Villafranca and Regalado got the Jaguars to within two anew but UV managed to hang on to score its second win in five games.
