The Beauty Enthusiast: Makeup at the MTV Video Music Awards

AWARDS shows are always well-attended by celebrities, and I always find it interesting to see how the stars do their hair and makeup. I noticed for this year’s Video Music Awards, most wore a lot of liner and mascara, while some wore next to nothing on their eyes. Here are some of the looks that I found to be the most flattering, and how you can try them at home.

Nina Dobrev

Nina’s look can easily go from day to night. Warm up the eyes with bronze and gold eyeshadows, and apply black eyeliner thinly before wiggling on several coats of mascara. Use a larger brush to apply bronzer on the forehead, temples, hollows of the cheeks and jaw. Finish off with a warm-hued red or scarlet lipstick.

Victoria Justice

Her Barbie doll makeup looks fresh and young, not scary or fake, because of her full, natural-looking brows. Apply a shimmery white eyeshadow on the lids, and blend light brown and medium brown all over the socket. Line eyes all the way around, including the inner corner, and put on lots of lengthening mascara or flirty false eyelashes. Keep the cheeks simple with an apricot blush, then put on a creamy, bright pink lipstick.

Lupita Nyong’o

This is a fun look to take on a night out, with the graphic eye, a touch of glitter and glossy lips. Create a similar look by using black eyeshadow on a stiff, flat shadow brush to create this winged shape on the eye. Using a softer brush will blend out shadow, but a stiff one lets you control the shape.

Don’t go past your eyebrows. Keep eyebrows soft so the overall look isn’t too strong. Use a glittery silver eyeshadow or, for less fallout, a silver glitter liner on the inner half of the lids and all along the lower lash line. Finish off with a warm blush and bronze-y gloss to add some warmth to the black and silver.

Kylie Jenner

She sported her signature neutral, contoured look with casual, volumized hair and a deep side part. To get Kylie’s look, emphasize the arch in the brows and go for brown tones, black liner and lots of mascara on top and bottom lashes.

What keeps her look dramatic despite being mostly matte and all neutral is the definition on her eyes and pout, and contoured cheeks. Use a lip liner in a pinky-brown shade to exaggerate the shape of the lips, especially the cupid’s bow, then fill in with a matte lipstick in the same color.
